When & where does the church meet?

Our Sunday services are at 9am, 11am, and 7pm at St Thomas’ Church on Penny St, situated in Lancaster’s city centre.  Each service has a distinctive feel:
  • 9am: Peaceful and reflective
  • 11am: Friendly and informal
  • 7pm: Lively and contemporary
There are groups for children and young people at both our morning services, and many youth and students attend our 7pm service.  For more information, click on the links above.

We also meet during the week in a variety of ways:
  • Wednesday 12pm: this is a simple spoken communion service in the church building which lasts about half an hour – perfect for a lunch break if you’re working or shopping in town.
  • Café Church: this is a discussion-based group which meets monthly in Esquires Café in the centre of town (no singing involved!).
  • Small Groups: we have a wide variety of small groups that meet for Bible study and prayer throughout the week in people’s homes scattered across the city.

Visit our Find Us page for maps and instructions to find the church building.

What should I expect when I visit the church?

You will receive a very warm welcome, particularly from our Welcome Team who will be able to answer your questions and direct you to where you need to go. Each congregation also has a leadership team, identified by lanyards.  Feel free to approach a member of either of these teams and introduce yourself. Each of our Sunday services will have a mix of sung worship, prayer, and updates, followed by a teaching session from the Bible by one of the leaders.  Tea, coffee, and biscuits are served after each service, and even beforehand at the 7pm (!), giving plenty of time to meet new people and find out more.  If you want more information, there is a welcome desk in the entrance foyer stocked with up to date information about the church.  Each service has its own style – why not come along and give them a try, and see which suits you best?

What happens for children at church?

We have a fantastic programme for children and young people.  We plan to have something for youth and children every Sunday at both our morning services.

At our 9am service, there are two junior church groups

  • Sparklers for pre-schoolers
  • Explorers for those at primary school
  • And a youth group Logos for those at secondary school
These groups meet weekly, and children start in their groups at 9am, returning to join the main congregation near the end of the service, just before 10am.

At our 11am service, there are five junior church groups
  • Ladybirds for 1-2’s
  • Buzzy Bees for 3-4’s
  • Freckled Frogs for Reception & Yr 1
  • Cool Camels for Yrs 2 & 3
  • Impact for Yrs 4-6
as well as two youth groups
  • Encounter for Yrs 7-9
  • The Gap for Yrs 10-13
These groups meet weekly except on the occasions when we have an all-age service, when everyone remains in together for worship, teaching, and fun together. At the 11am service, children and young people join the service at the start, and then go out to their groups after about 20 minutes – this will be clearly announced from the front.

Children will need to be registered in their groups the first time they attend.  For more information about what happens in the children’s and youth groups, please visit the relevant age groups for your child under Church Life   And to register your child please complete the appropriate registration form from the Useful Documents page

Is there a dress code?

No!  Please just be yourself and come dressed in your ‘normal’ clothes.

Where can I park?

Many of our regulars walk, cycle, or take public transport where possible in order to attend church services. However, there is a small church car park situated behind the church centre, up the cobbled lane (Peter Street) opposite the Police Station.  This is free to use on Sundays, though a permit is required to park there during the week.  When this is full, you can use the council’s Pay and Display car park (Auction Mart).  To park in this car park, turn right at the church (you have to, it’s all one way!).  At the main road, turn right (again, you have to, it’s one way!) and go immediately into the left lane and take the very first left into the council Pay and Display car park.  There are steps down onto the street at the far end of the car park.

Is there 'level access'?

Yes. Rather than use the steps at the front of the building go up the road at the side of the building (Marton Street) and come on to the church grounds at the back of the Church building.  Then it is a level path along either side of the church building to the front doors, where there is one small step; or come into church through the small yellow door just on the left.

Where are the toilets?

There are ladies, gents, disabled and baby changing facilities at the back of the main church and another complete set in the downstairs centre.

Will I have to join in?

Not at all! You are free to simply observe or participate as much as feels comfortable for you.

I have more questions, how can I get in touch and ask them?
Please feel free to contact us.  If you want to know who works in the church office, check out our Meet the Team page.

If you fill in a welcome card (found in the weekly bulletin) and hand it in at the welcome desk, a church member will contact you to see if you want to meet for a coffee and a chat, to help you get settled in the church. Or fill in this online welcome slip, remember to click on SEND.
